The drive crammed into a large van with everyone else almost put her to sleep again, but she roused with renewed interest when they stopped at one of Fort Leonard Woodâs security gates to be checked over and let in. The NCO at the gate this late at night didnât look particularly happy to be there, but he glanced inside the vehicle and snickered. âLook alive, fuzzies. Youâre in for a real treat, huh? Enjoy it while it lasts.â
The NCOs shuttling them through the gates laughed and waved him off.
Once they rolled through the security gates and approached the reception barracks, though, it finally started to sink in that she was in a whole new world.
There were people everywhere. A lot of them looked like her and the other recruits shipped in to start the next cycle of basic training. Most of them stared around with wide eyes, taking in the dull gray concrete buildings, the vehicles, the uniformed soldiers hurrying back and forth.
Idina slung her duffel bag over her shoulder and followed the line of recruits into the barracks. Iâm here. For real. I never even thought about the Army until a month ago, and now this is where I ended up.
Only now, under the bright lights illuminating the barracks under the thick darkness in the middle of the night, did she realize how alone she was.
Nobody knows me. Nobody cares who I was before this or who my family is, or what Iâve done. I guess weâre all alone in this at the very beginning, huh?
They moved through a narrow hallway toward what looked like a lobby, then one of the NCOs who led them in pointed at the NCO behind the desk. âThis is it. Youâre here until Phase One begins, so make the most of it.â
Then they were left there in the lobby without any other instructions. The recruits looked around with wide eyes as the minutes ticked on and the night stretched out into yet another unending period of nothingness. Then the soldier behind the desk looked up at them and cleared his throat.
âProcessing starts over there. Get in line.â
The lines, it seemed, were never-ending that night. They waited their turn to be processed, fingerprinted, issued their military ID and the Eagle Card that was good only for the small commissary in the reception barracks for toiletry items theyâd need while they were there.
âThree hundred dollars on this,â the woman told Idina blandly as she handed over the card. âIt comes out of your first paycheck.â
Idina tried to chuckle, but it was hard when she couldnât keep her eyes open the way she wanted. âDonât spend it all in one place, right?â
âVery funny. Keep moving.â
Then the recruits shuffled in a tired, bewildered line toward another room where civilians stood behind tables stacked with crates of uniforms. The man Idina approached looked her up and down, pursed his lips, and shrugged. âYeah, that should work.â
âWork forââ She was about to ask for what, but the man grabbed a stack of four folded uniforms and practically shoved them into her arms.
